December 2018
The US Economic Overview December 2018
The US Consumer Confidence Index increased to 98.3 in December 2018 to 97.5 in November 2018. The
GDP at current price of the US increased slightly from US $20.7 trillion in September 2018 to US $20.8
trillion in October 2018.
Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 3.5% in the third quarter of 2018,
according to the "advance" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the second quarter,
real GDP increased by 4.2%.
In the advanced estimate, the increase in real GDP was also 3.5%. With this second estimate for the third
quarter, the general picture of economic growth remains the same; upward revisions to nonresidential
fixed investment and private inventory investment were offset by downward revisions to personal
consumption expenditures (PCE) and state and local government spending.
Composites Market Update for December 2018
The US Composites Market in December was stronger than expected with year-over-year growth of 5% or
greater, depending on the industries served. Most sectors remained strong and grew at a modest rate. The
Marine and RV markets were the weakest in terms of performance, being flat or slightly down in terms of
year-over-year performance. Raw material input prices softened slightly in the past several weeks, but this
is not expected to impact downstream costs. Instead, some major players are anticipating a possible slight
increase in prices around late February or early March, consistent with the trend of creeping price increases
in 2018. The outlook for January is strong, with initial expectations for growth to be on par with D ecember.
Total growth for 2018 was roughly 3%-4% as compared to 2017. Freight continues to be a challenge
(particularly bulk hazardous freight), as well as uncertainty based on tariffs and related trade policies. There
is also a slight softening in the housing market, which may have a greater impact in the Spring and Summer
months if it continues.
