Bosch’s Role in the Hydrogen Vehicle Supply Chain 

Bosch plays a pivotal role in the hydrogen vehicle supply chain, particularly through its division, Bosch Manufacturing Solutions. This division specializes in providing advanced manufacturing technology and services essential for the production of hydrogen fuel cell systems. Bosch Manufacturing Solutions is at the forefront of developing and manufacturing key components for hydrogen fuel cells, including fuel cell stacks and control units. When interviewed, Bosch Manufacturing employee explains that Bosch is involved with “Fuel cell manufacturing in Germany and now the US, with some application in trucks. We have from the water generation, to electrolyzers, and also some components of the tank not the tank itself but parts.”

What Equipment Does Bosch Provide for the Hydrogen Value Chain?

For example, Bosch has partnered with PowerCell Sweden AB to produce fuel cells for automotive applications. This partnership combines Bosch's manufacturing prowess with PowerCell's expertise in fuel cell technology. Bosch Industrial Solutions also has a partnership with Nikola. Bosch has collaborated with Nikola for over two years, contributing advanced technology and engineering expertise to develop the Nikola Two truck. This truck features a fuel-cell system co-designed by Nikola and Bosch, along with Bosch's Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) for enhanced computing power and functionality  . 
Bosch has also started producing fuel cell drives for Nikola in Germany, leveraging its global manufacturing network. Components for these fuel cells come from Bosch's plants in Bamberg and Homburg, and production is also taking place in China. This makes Bosch one of the few companies capable of mass-producing complex fuel-cell stacks. Overall, Bosch's extensive involvement in the development and production of fuel-cell technology for Nikola underscores its pivotal role in advancing the hydrogen vehicle industry. 

What are the Challenges and Future Outlooks? 

While Bosch's contributions to the hydrogen industry are substantial, the sector still faces several challenges. The high cost of hydrogen production, limited refueling infrastructure, and competition from battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are significant hurdles.
